Maps and Information
Africa
- Africa South of the Sahara - Karen Fung, an Africana librarian at Stanford University, created this site and has actively maintained it for years. It is a searchable site that can also be browsed by country or topic. Fung also includes a section for students on evaluating Africana Web resources.
- African History Homepage - Dr. Jim Jones of the history department at West Chester University of Pennsylvania maintains this site for his African history classes. It has a number of useful time lines, maps (including blank maps of Africa - perfect for quizzes), some colonial documents, and other useful sources for teaching. Jones also includes his African history syllabi.
- Internet African History Sourcebook - Housed at Fordham University, this site was created by Paul Halsall. It contains material extracted from three other Internet History Sourcebooks (Ancient, Medieval, and Modern). The categories listed are African History: General; Africa Origins; Egypt; Other Ancient African Societies; Greek and Roman Africa; Africa and Islam; Ethiopia and Christianity; slavery; European Imperialism; Modern Africa; Gender and Sexuality in Modern Africa; and Further Resources on African History. Although many of the links to other Web sites have been broken, the existing body of documents housed on the site is incredibly useful.
Asia
- WWW Virtual Library - Asian Studies - This is another important metasite, the Asian Studies WWW Virtual Library formerly at the Universita de Venenzia, relocated to Harvard, then moved to the VLIB.org servers. Fortunately, this site has been broadened to further enhance its authority.
- ANU College of Asia & the Pacific - In Asian studies the grandest of the sites is this metasite at the Australian National University (Coombs), maintained by T. Matthew Ciolek. The Coombs site is staggering in its extent and will lead the visitor to literally thousands of additional sites in every conceivable field of Asian studies.
- Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation - This is an area-wide site maintained by the organization for Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation. It is a gigantic site with many free downloads of publications. This would be particularly useful for those working in recent history, and in economic issues, of course.
