WESTFORD ACADEMY Override Procedure
Sometimes parents/guardians/students choose to reject placement recommendations and request placement in a more demanding level. There are risks in doing so. Specifically: A student who does poorly in a more advanced class may weaken his/her record. Sometimes, difficulties in one course generate difficulties in others. To keep up with the class, the students may require more individual help than the teacher can reasonably be expected to provide. The demands of an advanced curriculum do not allow teachers to accommodate to the pace of a student who is misplaced. The teacher cannot provide individual tutoring. We do want students to challenge themselves but sometimes those challenges may bring grades (such as a C) that are not acceptable to the student and/or parent.
The Science and Engineering/Technology program at Westford Academy presents a broad program designed to develop an awareness and appreciation of the extent of science and its influence on the Earth, and human’s well being. All courses are laboratory classes and the sequence of courses offered will carry the student through the various phases of science techniques and content. As the student develops a logical approach to problem solving, the aim of the science program is to have each student become a scientifically educated citizen and a life long learner. The program is aligned with the Massachusetts Science Frameworks and satisfies the requirements for post high school training in various science
fields whether it be medical, engineering, or liberal arts.
