RE: TRUSTEE SCHOLARSHIPS & AWARDS FOR 2014

This web page (Guide) contains a list of scholarship opportunities available from individuals, service and fraternal organizations, as well as Trustee Scholarships and Awards in the community.  Through their generosity, over $60,000 will be distributed to deserving graduating seniors.

PLEASE NOTE THE APPLICATION PROCESS CAN NOT BE STARTED BEFORE MARCH 6TH and the DEADLINE FOR FILING ALL APPLICATIONS IS 2:00 PM, Friday MARCH 21 st 2014

  •        Any 2014 Westford Academy graduating senior is eligible to apply for these scholarships The qualifications for each scholarship are listed in the following Guide.  Be sure you meet these requirements before you apply for each scholarship.
  •        You will be applying for most of the scholarships through your personal Naviance Account- Click on WA Scholarship Applications  (lefthand side of page)
  •         Links to the two applications are on your "About Me" page- Surveys to Take.
  •        "Special Applications" are found the lefthand side of page under Special Scholarship Applications- or see Mrs.Samaha
  •        Supplemental Letters of recommendation, a personal statement or other "Scholarship Specific" applications are be necessary for some scholarships. These scholarships are listed under the WA Scholarship App with Supplements. Please make sur you provide the required documentation for these scholarships
  •        These applications are viewed by awarding committee members.  Be certain that your application reflects you at your best.
  •        Recipients are expected to acknowledge the generosity of the Westford Academy Trustees, donating community, and school organizations with a short letter of appreciation.  
  •         At Awards Night, Thursday June 5th, the award recipient will be provided with the acknowledgement address.

QUALIIFICATIONS
INSTRUCTIONS
ABBOT AWARD (T)
This scholarship is given in memory of John Abbot, one of the original trustees of Westford Academy.  Mr. Abbot was a Second Lieutenant in the Revolutionary War.  He served as Town Clerk and Treasurer between the years of 1792 and 1794.  This scholarship is awarded to a senior entering a four-year college.

ALEXANDER D. VASILEVSKY SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AWARD  (T)
Scholarship will be awarded to a Westford Academy graduating senior with financial support/needs who is pursuing a Science/Engineering degree in any college.

WA SCHOLARSHIP APP with SUPPLEMENT- & Short (minimum 2 paragraph) essay about the student's background and ambitions.
ANASTAS VELANTZAS PRESIDENT’S AWARD  (T)
Scholarship will be given to the President of the Senior Class - unless receiving another award.  Student must be going on to a 4 year college and/or be a 3 sport athlete for all four years and not receiving another award.  School Selection Committee recommends to Organization Committee.

Senior who has participated as a cast or crew member in a middle school production or a senior who has worked as a high school assistant to one of the professional staff and plans on attending a 2 or 4 year college.

The award will be open to a member of the boys and girls track program.

DAVID GRAND MEMORIAL WRESTLING SCHOLARSHIP  (T)
Dedication- Westford Academy senior who is dedicated to the sport of wrestling; Perseverance- Someone who doesn't give up when faced with tough times on and off the mat; Passion- someone who has a love of wrestling and embodies all the qualities of a good wrestler.  

Selection made by family- no application
DEREK LYMAN SCHOLARSHIP   (T)
This scholarship will be awarded to a Westford Academy Senior who has had passion for theater as an actor, singer and team builder; who had demonstrated leadership and mentoring of others; and who has shown a strong commitment to community service.  This is a merit-based scholarship.  All students are encouraged to apply regardless of financial need.

1) Your passion for theater as an actor, singer and team builder

Graduating senior who is a member of WA Music Program and plans post graduation education.  Contribution to music department a major consideration. Organization Committee selects.

Applicant must be a resident of Westford attending a 4 year college and in the top 50% of the class of 2013.  Additional Consideration if you: are majoring in the food service industry, have prior food service industry experience and/or have prior employment history at Five Guys.

This scholarship is given in memory of Katherine Delia Enos.  Katie, a member of the class of 2014, was an accomplished athlete, musician and writer, who left this earth just before her freshman year at Westford Academy.  This scholarship is awarded to a Westford Academy senior who has been accepted to a four year college, who has played a varsity sport in high school and who has been involved in the arts.  Preference is given to a student who has demonstrated a passion for athletics or the arts and writing, and will be pursuing a degree in English or a related major.

Katie didn’t like labels-the jock, the brain, the theater person.  It was Katie’s mission to get people to cross boundaries- to be more than the label.  Describe how have you crossed boundaries and not allowed anyone to put a label on you.

KELLER WILLLIAMS SCHOLARSHIP
Given to a Westford Academy Senior going on to a 2 or 4 year college.  The scholarship will be based on a student who has financial need and who possesses the qualities of self-motivation, dedication, and good character.  Selection will be made by the Westford Keller Williams Scholarship Committee and the Westford Academy Guidance Department.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Good academic standing – GPA of at least 3.0 in 11th & 12th grade.  Community service – a commitment to the community as exhibited through some level of service, either ongoing or project based.  Financial Need.  Improvement – a student who has, during their high school years, had the courage and perseverance to significantly improve their academic performance and make positive changes to their life.

Day Schools and has demonstrated excellence in music, creative writing, physical education, or citizenship.  Student must be attending a four-year college or university.  The award is to be given upon successful completion of first semester.  Selection to be made by the Westford Academy School Scholarship Committee

VICTOR "CHEERIO" NEAL SCHOLARSHIP   (T)
For nearly 20 years of his 50 year residency of Westford, Victor "CHEERIO" Neal Sr., was a huge fan of WA.  CHEERIO was a well known bus driver for many sports and extra curricular activities along with being a regular attendee to many school events throughout the year.  CHEERIO took pride photographing all the events he attended and then sharing the photos with faculty, students and their families.  In a win or lose situation he would always provide encouraging words, a mint or even his famous homemade cookies to lift your spirits.  You could count on CHEERIO to make a positive impact as he lived by the motto "In Life - Give More Than You Receive".

Given to seniors who are present members and playing participants in the Westford Youth Basketball Association.  Consideration will also be given to those who have made a substantial contribution to the program, typically beyond coaching, but did not play as seniors. Volunteer activity in the WYBA is an important component.  College acceptance required.
In addition, to the above, one or two of the applicants will be presented with the Jim Mancuso Memorial Award.  This student will exemplify the traits that Jim Mancuso brought to the association for so many years.  Jim was a tireless, selfless, volunteer who gave everything he had to make the WYBA successful with his one and only focus being the players.  His good sportsmanship, good humor and incredible instinct, energy and enthusiasm leave a lasting legacy for the WYBA.  Selection will be made by the WYBA Scholarship Committee.
