Yet another wild week of weather and two more school cancellations. With spring just days away I sure hope the weather pattern changes for the better! At least the days are longer and we are halfway through March!
Unfortunately, we were not able to hold the March Out on Wednesday because of school being canceled. We do intend to hold a day of reflection and remembrance, at a future date for those lost their lives in Parkland, Florida. There have been over 300 school shootings since 2012, which is unacceptable. Schools are supposed to be some of the safest places for our children to be, and yet school violence continues to be a major issue across our country. I hope that as parents you continue to speak with your son/daughter about "see something, say something" in order for any concerns to be brought forward to the W.A. Administration and/or the Westford Police Department. We are all in this together!
On Thursday, March 22, 2018, we have planned for a Cultural Diversity and Inclusion Day at Westford Academy. It is a regular day of school and attendance will be taken, however there will be a variety of guest speakers and activities throughout the day. It is a wonderful opportunity for the student body to learn about our diverse community. Once the schedule is confirmed on Monday, I will share the outline for the day with all of you and the student body. This day was generated by students and the Cultural Diversity and Inclusion Committee and was shared with the Westford School Committee last Monday evening, March 12, 2018. Following a few questions, the School Committee provided very positive feedback and supported the day.

Westford Academy Spring Crew Update
We are still in the process of finding/hiring Crew coaches for the upcoming spring season. It doesn't appear we will have a coach in place for the start on Monday, March 19, 2018. However, our efforts to find a coach for this season will not end Monday. We are committed to bringing crew/rowing to Westford Academy for this spring season and future seasons. Westford Academy understands other club teams are starting up and crew athletes need to make decisions. We want all students and parents to know that we will accept students from other clubs both later this spring and/or future seasons. Thank you all for your patience and understanding as we continue the process of hiring coaches. Adam Gagne, Athletic Director

For Principal's Friday Newsletter
The University of Massachusetts Division of Pediatric Surgery, based at UMass Memorial Children's Medical Center in Worcester, is conducting a research study titled “Barriers to Helmet and Protective Equipment Use in Children Participating in Snow Sports” to better understand current helmet-use habits of adolescents who ski or snowboard. 40% of children who have presented to UMass with a skiing or snowboarding injury were not wearing a helmet, and 68% sustained a head injury. The goal of the study is to identify barriers to helmet use and safety when local children and teenagers are enjoying the slopes, as well as identifying risk-taking behaviors while skiing and snowboarding. The Pediatric Surgery research team will ultimately use this information to design future educational programs about winter-sports safety for schools in our
local area, including WA. Members of the UMass Department of Pediatric Surgery will come to WA on Tuesday, March 20th to conduct a short 10 minute survey about helmet use and risk-taking behaviors while skiing and snowboarding. It will be supervised in the presence of a school faculty member, is completely confidential, and is approved by the UMass IRB. If your child enjoys skiing or snowboarding, and you are willing to have them participate in this study, please contact Ms. Murphy for an information packet with consent form or Dr. Robert McLoughin at Robert.Mcloughlin@umassmemorial.org further information about the study.
