Good afternoon,

We are very excited to share more information with you about Westford Academy's partnership with the Challenge Success program directed by Stanford University.  The initial step of this partnership was to administer The Stanford Survey of Adolescent School Experiences to better understand the student experience at our school. The full survey was administered to high school students approximately one year ago, and we have been analyzing and sharing the results ever since. The information has been extremely helpful to us and the administration has already begun to institute some changes that benefit our student body including adding a minute of time between bells for passing time and homework free vacations.  We are considering a variety of additional ideas with our high school Challenge Success Team comprised of administrators, teachers, parents and students.

The Stanford Survey of Adolescent School Experience:
As I indicated above, our school administered The Stanford Survey of Adolescent School Experiences approximately one year ago. This survey is part of a collaborative effort between Westford Academy and the Challenge Success project in the School of Education at Stanford University. This online survey measures students' perspectives on homework, extracurricular activities, sleep, physical health, stress, parent expectations, academic engagement, academic integrity, and teacher support. Over 15,000 students from more than 40 schools have taken the survey over the past several years, and schools have gained a great deal of information from the results of the survey, including what students see as stressful and challenging as well as sources of support within the school. The results from the survey have also helped to guide schools in their efforts to make changes in particular areas where there is great need.~This information will then help guide our school in deciding what areas we may want to focus on to better support student well-being and our students' overall school experience.

Information about Challenge Success:
For the past decade, Challenge Success has helped nearly 100 schools transform policies and practices to address the need for academic engagement and well-being for their students. Our partnership with Challenge Success includes forming a multi-stake holder team comprised of parents, students, and teachers to reflect upon and examine challenges, obstacles and best practices needed to support our community of learners at Westford Academy moving forward. Our CS team will work with a Stanford coach and meet regularly throughout the year to develop an action plan and begin the process of transforming policies and practices to create positive change. The following link takes you to the Challenge Success website where you can learn more about this important program.

Music touches all of us.  It's a universal language that unites us.  For Westford students, music education provides essential skills that help build discipline, confidence, and a sense of belonging.  At FAME (Friends Advancing Music Education), a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization of parent volunteers, we strive to enrich classroom and extra-curricular learning in general music, band, orchestra, and chorus at all grade levels in the Westford Public Schools.  FAME is the primary organization to award scholarships to graduating Westford Academy seniors in recognition of their dedication and commitment to the study of music and music-related community service.  In addition, we have helped fund music-related  transportation, composition projects, music awards, sheet music and uniforms, and scholarships for summer music camps. To continue our work for the 2017-2018 school year, we need your help!  Please visit the FAME website to make a one-time, tax deductible donation to FAME through our FAME-ous Fundraiser.  This will be FAME's main fundraiser and primary source of funding this year, replacing the Music Cafe and Dinner Dance. To donate by mail, print our form here and send it,  along with a check, to: FAME, PO Box 627, Westford MA 01886.
Thank you for your support!
