Good afternoon,

Please visit with us tomorrow from 5:30PM to 10:00 PM for the Rajiv Paluri International Night.  $5 donation at the door to support the Rajiv Paluri Memorial Fund.

Some important information for you below.

From the desk of School Resource Officer, Detective Geoffrey Pavao:
Good Afternoon Parent(s)/Guardian(s):
In the past few weeks the Westford Academy Administrators and I have seen a large increase in the use of “Vapes” inside of the high school.  The usage is being seen in every grade level, demographic, and gender.  I write to you in an effort to inform you of this trend, the dangers it truly does pose and the in school/legal ramifications.  “Vapes” have been around for the past couple of years, but the newest and “coolest” thing to use is the JUUL.

Please see below for a picture of the JUUL Vape device and the Nicotine cartridges used in the vape:
Let me be clear these Vapes, specifically the JUUL, is used to smoke nicotine-flavored juice.

Below is information straight from the JUUL Website:
What is the nicotine concentration?~
Each JUULpod contains 0.7mL with 5% nicotine by weight, approximately equivalent to 1 pack of cigarettes or 200 puffs.
How many cigarettes = 1 pod?
One JUULpod is approximately equivalent to 1 pack of cigarettes or 200 puffs. Each JUULpod contains 0.7mL with 5% nicotine by weight.
Are you going to make non-nicotine juice?
At this time all our JUULpods include nicotine. Our Product team is constantly working on new developments but we currently do not offer non-nicotine options. Please subscribe to our newsletter to keep up with the latest JUUL developments.
What is in JUULpod Juice?
After years of research, JUUL Labs developed its proprietary e-liquid formula, which is mixed under strict quality controlled processes utilizing industry leading U.S. partners.~
Our ingredients include glycerol, propylene glycol, natural oils, extracts and flavor, nicotine and benzoic acid.
  • Glycerol and Propylene Glycol have commonly used~humectants in vaporization liquids, and also used in a number of consumer products like toothpaste.~
  • Benzoic Acid is a naturally occurring acid found in the tobacco plant, which is a part of our proprietary formulation that makes JUUL the ultimate vaping experience.~
  • As a policy, our development and manufacturing process does not add diacetyl and acetylproprionyl~(or 2,3-pentanedione) as flavor ingredients.~
  • Nicotine content: 0.7mL with 5% nicotine by weight (59 mg/mL per pod, ~ content of a pack of cigarettes). If you have further questions or concerns about the health impact of vaping we recommend you contact a health care professional.
If you have further questions or concerns about the health impact of vaping or ingestion of nicotine, we recommend that you consult with your~health care professional.
Can I refill my JUULpods with juice?
For health and safety concerns, please do not attempt to refill your JUULpods. They are not designed for refills nor re-use. --- To maintain product quality JUULpods are not designed for refills nor re-use
Can I open the JUULpod?
For health and safety concerns, please do not open your JUULpods. They are not designed for refills nor re-use.
As you can see the JUUL is not a safe alternative to cigarettes, and I am being told that some kids are going through 2-3 JUUL cartridges in a day.  That is the equivalent to smoking 3 packs of cigarettes a day!
Do not let your children tell you these devices have no nicotine, that the cartridges are reusable and filled with only “oils” and that itís ok because everyone at school is doing it.
Per the Westford Academy Handbook, anyone caught using/possessing ANY tobacco and/or electronic cigarette products (this includes Vapes) within the school buildings, school facilities, on school grounds, at school-sponsored field trips WILL have consequences.  It is strictly prohibited.  All tobacco products will be confiscated and school discipline is as follows:
1st Violation: fined $100 per Westford Board of Health, In-school suspension, parent notified
2nd Violation: fined $200, 2 days in house suspension, parent notified
3rd Violation: fined $300, 2 days OUT house suspension, re-entry meeting needed
If your child plays participates in interscholastic athletics at W.A, all MIAA athletic rules will apply.
As always if you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

A follow-up:

From the desk of Principal James Antonelli:
Detective Pavao shared with me this week that many parent(s)/guardian(s) are actually purchasing vapes and/or electronic cigarettes for their son/daughter.  A local store indicated that this has been the trend.  This is NOT a good idea!  With the holidays around the corner, scratch those requests of the list!
