Working Papers - Summer Schedule
If your child has been offered a job and needs to pick up working papers between July 1st and August 4th, please have them see Nina Mangan at the Westford Public Schools Central Office located at 23 Depot Street (just behind the Abbot School.)  Nina will be available to help your child Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Starting Monday, August 7th, working papers will once again be available at Westford Academy (Main Office) between the hours of 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Math Department Updates and Reminders
Algebra 1/Algebra 2 Transition- Please remember that a student's grade in Accelerated Algebra 1 or Algebra 1 Part B is used to determine eligibility for Geometry as well as for Algebra 2. Their performance in Geometry will also be used in the recommendation process, assessing readiness based on~the Characteristics of an Honors Student on the Westford Academy Math Department website.
Outside Courses and Opt-Out Testing - Courses taken outside of Westford Public Schools do not replace the courses offered at Westford Academy. Grades from outside courses will not be used to determine placement or eligibility for courses offered at WA. Additionally, beginning in the 2017-2018 school year, students will no longer have the option of testing out of courses at WA, including Geometry Honors, Intro to Programming, and Java Honors.
Geometry Honors - Starting in the 2018-2019 school year, all students must take a Geometry course at WA either their Freshmen or Sophomore year. Students must earn a 95 in Geometry CP1 or an 83 in Geometry Honors at Westford Academy to be recommended for Trig & Pre-Calc Honors.
Doubling Up - Students have the option to double up their math courses in either Algebra 1B with Geometry their Freshmen year or Geometry with Algebra 2 their Sophomore year. Doubling up is not recommended by the Math Department, particularly in a student's Freshmen year, as students are encouraged to explore their passions and interests by taking electives. When possible, students are encouraged to wait to double up their Sophomore year instead. Students are expected to take a math course each year, even if they choose to take two math classes in one year.
Algebra 2 Enrollment - Starting in the 2018-2019 school year, Algebra 2 enrollment will be limited to students in grades 10-12. We believe the material presented in this course is more developmentally appropriate for students in these levels. Freshmen who are particularly interested in furthering their Math education are encouraged to enroll in Exploring Computer Science. The collaboration and problem solving opportunities in this course are designed to help prepare students for success in both college and career in the STEM field and beyond. The application of mathematical logical reasoning in this course will be extremely beneficial in the growth and development of all students.

WestfordCAT - Graduation Ceremony
Each year WestfordCAT records the entire graduation ceremony and makes personalized keepsake copies available on either DVD and Blu-ray discs for $15 each.  Families can order their copy by calling the station at 978-692-7152 or through their website at: http://www.westfordcat.org/services/dvd-order-form-2/

From the Nurses Clinic:
If your child has an epipen in the clinic, please have them pick it up by the end of the year.  We do not hold onto any epipens over the summer.  Thank you

WPS music families:
We are privileged to live in a town with gifted music educators, and supportive administration, parents, and community members who all work together to create a strong music program in our public schools. Indeed, Westford has been recognized for the fourth year running with a prestigious award given by the NAMM Foundation as one of the nations “Best Communities for Music Education”.  FAME (Friends Advancing Music Education) is a nonprofit, parent volunteer organization that has been supporting WPS music since 1983. We strive to enrich classroom learning in general music, band, orchestra, and chorus at all grade levels, meeting needs that extend beyond the regular school music budget. FAME has provided assistance for such things as sheet music, equipment, busing expenses, uniforms, master class workshops, music-related student community service projects, and more.  Each year FAME also awards senior and summer music camp scholarships. Our fundraising efforts can help defray costs that may make the difference in some families ability to participate in music programs. We believe wholeheartedly in the benefits of music education to every student's overall performance and success! Each year, FAME holds the fall Music Cafe, spring Dinner Dance, as well as bake sales and raffles. This year FAME was able to meet and exceed its fundraising goals, offering over $8,000 for scholarships and music teacher requests. A new benefit concert, Chick Singer Night--produced by Marcia Macres and Jennifer Truesdale and featuring Westford music students--donated its proceeds of $1000 to FAME! We would like to offer a huge THANK YOU to our many contributors and volunteers who support us in our mission.  We also greatly appreciate the support of our generous community business sponsors. A special shout out goes to Red Hat for their sponsorship of the Dinner Dance. Experiencing a transition in leadership and being very short on parent volunteers, we were almost unable to do the Dinner Dance this year.  In order for FAME to continue, we need your ideas--and your help putting them into action! Volunteering for FAME is a great way to connect with your child's music program and meet other music families. In addition to openings on the board, there are many other ways, large or small, you can contribute your time and talent. Come to one of our meetings or contact us:
Please complete our short  (5 minutes) FAME Survey by 6/30/2017.  We value your feedback and look forward to your suggestions and ideas!

WHAT TO DO WITH OLD BOOKS:
The Westford Recycling Commission would like you to know that if you have any books to recycle, they can be dropped off at the Water Department (58 Forge Village Rd), just around the corner from WA.  Whether you are dropping off or driving by, be sure to check out how beautifully the container has been painted by some of our own WA students.  This book recycling is open to the public, so feel free to inform your students.

Have a great weekend.  Jim Antonelli
