HEALTH AND WELLNESS UPDATE
Head injuries are a serious health risk for athletes. Much publicity has been given recently to former NFL players who have developed serious illnesses after retiring from the game. The very nature of contact sports means that there is always a risk to the athlete.
Prevention of head injuries requires education of the athlete, coach, and medical personnel. In addition, athletes should wear and maintain the proper equipment designed to safeguard against injury.
At Westford Academy, we have long had a policy and program in place to protect our student-athletes. We utilize a software testing program (IMPACT) to develop a baseline on all of our student-athletes beginning their freshmen year who participate in contact sports. The software is meant to read the short and long term memory capability as well as the brain reaction and processing ability. This data is kept on record. Student-athletes are re-tested every other year at a normal interval.
Our policy is straight forward for any student-athlete that suffers a head injury or loses consciousness. They are to cease participation immediately. An injury report form is to be completed by the coach and given to the Trainer. The student-athlete should be seen by their own physician.
The return to action is the decision of the Trainer. The trainer will perform a follow-up test using the IMPACT software to gauge the results versus the student-athletes’ baseline. Before authorizing a “return to action”, the trainer will evaluate the student-athlete’s condition with an interview and any documentation from a physician.
Safeguarding the health and well being of the student-athlete is all of our responsibility. We expect the student-athlete to be honest about their condition, the coach to be cognizant of any signs of injury, and the parent to assist in getting medical treatment. Any time there is a head injury, we err on the side of caution and place the student-athletes’ health as first priority.

FALL SEASON

miaa_logo_-_color1.gif Ghosts drop 34-28 decision
to Gloucester on the Gridiron
In a Division 1A Playoff matchup, WA jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead and the game then see-sawed back and forth until the final minute when Gloucester crossed the goal line to take a 34-28 advantage. With very little time left, the Ghosts could not put the ball in the end zone one final time.
Congratulations to Coach McKenna, his staff, and all the members of the football team. We are proud of their effort and know that WA football is on the map and we'll be back to finish the job!

GHOSTS IN COMEBACK WIN OVER ACTON BOXBORO
After WA took a 7-0 lead on the opening drive, the Acton Boxboro ground game took over and they went into the halftime with a 21-7 lead. The Ghosts closed the gap with a third quarter touchdown and went into the fourth quarter trailing 21-14. With the clock winding down, a Dugan to Cornelius pass connected for the tying touchdown.
In the first overtime, AB scored a touchdown and WA responded with a touchdown of their own. The next series for WA sputtered and they kicked a field goal to take the lead 31-28. On AB's series, the ball popped loose on third down and was recovered by Hennessey to secure the win...and take the DCL title outright.
WA now will move into the MIAA Playoffs on Tuesday, December 1 against Northeast Champion Gloucester. The site and time to be  determined.

Schedule Conflicts:
In the course of the year, there may be occasions when our student-athletes have a legitimate conflict between their athletic schedule and a personal or family obligation. If that should occur, the student-athlete should communicate the situation to their respective coach and notify them in advance of the event. We realize the commitment to family comes first and will work with the student-athlete to accommodate their situation within the team rules. When possible, we will do our best to avoid schedule conflicts with major public activities or events.

College Recruiting:
Many parents and students are uncertain of the process of college recruiting. There are many questions to be asked and many answers to be discovered to help student-athletes make the right choice.  For information,  The NCAA has its own website and would be an important resource on the rules and eligibility for student athletes. That can be accessed at NCAA.org.

Academic awards:
Student-athletes receive academic recognition based on cumulative grade average for the term. This is the same criteria that is used for the Honor Roll. The GPA is available only twice per year and not in time for season awards.
The student-athlete with the highest cumulative average on varsity is awarded the team Academic Award. All student-athletes who have a cumulative average of 90% or better receive the All Scholastic Award.
