RE: TRUSTEE SCHOLARSHIPS & AWARDS FOR 2010

This web page (Guide) contains a list of scholarship opportunities available from service and fraternal organizations, as well as individuals in the community.  Through their generosity, over $60,000 will be distributed to deserving graduating seniors.

PLEASE NOTE THE DEADLINE FOR FILING ALL APPLICATIONS IS 2:00 PM  MARCH 18th, 2010

  • Any 2010 Westford Academy graduating senior is eligible to apply for these scholarships
  • The qualifications for each scholarship are listed in the following Guide.  Be sure you meet these requirements before you submit the application and that you use the correct application form.
  • These applications are viewed by awarding committee members.  Be certain that your application reflects you at your best.
  • Recipients are expected to acknowledge the generosity of the Westford Academy Trustees, donating community, and school organizations with a short letter of appreciation.  At Awards Night, Thursday June 3rd, the award recipient will be provided with the acknowledgement address.
  • Letters of recommendation, a personal statement or transcript may be necessary for some scholarships. The guidance secretary will be responsible for providing the transcripts but you must submit all other pertinent data with your application.
  • See your counselor if you have any questions.

Some hard copies of the scholarship guide and application will be available in the Guidance Office and Library for your reference.

INSTRUCTIONS
ABBOT AWARD
This scholarship is given in memory of John Abbot, one of the original trustees of Westford Academy. Mr. Abbot was a Second Lieutenant in the revolutionary War.  He served as Town Clerk and Treasurer between the years of 1792 and 1794.  This scholarship is awarded to a senior entering a four year college.

ANASTAS VELANTZAS PRESIDENT’S AWARD
Scholarship will be given to the President of the Senior Class - unless receiving another award. Student must be going on to a 4 year college and/or be a 3 sport athlete for all four years and not receiving another award. School Selection Committee recommends to Organization Committee.

The Blanchard Teen Center Service Award is intended to recognize a significant contribution to the Blanchard Teen Center and the Westford Community.

The award will be open to a member of the boys and girls track program. Family and Track coaches select will make decision.

Applicant must be a senior girl who has participated in the Westford Youth Basketball Association Rec basketball. This scholarship requires a standard application and a 1 page essay about good sportsmanship and the love of the game.  Memories of Jack particularly welcomed in the essay.

Given to a student who has achieved despite extreme difficulties.  M.L. Westcott and Counselors recommend to Trustee committee.

MICHAEL J. LORDEN II MEMORIAL AWARD
Senior planning on attending a 4-year college who has been active in community service, football and has financial need.  Two winners will be selected each year.  Recommendation from a coach required.  Team leader, helpful with young and old, stands up for other people’s rights, respectful, fair, dependable, loves sports, outdoors, music, animals and most importantly family and friends.  Family committee selects and recommends to Trustees.

MIDDLESEX COUNTY 4H ADVISORY COUNCIL
Open to currently enrolled members of the Middlesex County 4-H Program, who have been in 4-H for three or more years, and are completing high school level studies within 6 months of June 2010.

MIDDLESEX SAVINGS CHARITABLE FOUNDATION
SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Good academic standing – GPA of at least 3.0 in 11th & 12th grade.  Community service – a commitment to the community as exhibited through some level of service, either ongoing or project based. Financial Need. Improvement – a student who has, during their high school years, had the courage and perseverance to significantly improve their academic performance and make positive changes to their life.

MIDDLESEX WEST CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AWARD
Awarded to a graduating senior who has demonstrated a clear ability to pursue further education beyond high school.  The recipient must have a desire to pursue a degree in business or related field or be an employee of a business that is an active member of the Middlesex West Chamber of Commerce, or be a child/dependent of a Middlesex West Chamber of Commerce member; or be a child/dependent of an employee of a business that is an active member of the Middlesex West Chamber of Commerce.    School Selection Committee selects.

NABNASSET AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY UNIT # 437
Given to student not receiving another scholarship from the community and who has demonstrated good citizenship and community service.

This award was established in memory of two members of the Stone family.  Timothy was one of the original students enrolled at Westford Academy. James M. served as Speaker of the House in Massachusetts from 1866 to 1867.  This scholarship is awarded to a senior entering a four-year college

Given to a graduating senior accepted at a school of higher learning to obtain a degree that shows concern for others.  Average scholar, enthusiasm for sports, especially hockey.  Special consideration given to student with any knowledge of Tim.  Family reviews applications and recommends to Trustees.

Barbara Brewer Award –
A graduating senior attending a 4-year college program in Nursing, who attended Westford Public School for a period of 12 years, and served the school & community.
Margaret Sullivan Tebbetts Memorial Award -  
A graduating senior attending a college program in the Criminal Justice Field or Fire Science, who attended Westford Public Schools for a period of 12 years, and served the school community as well as community-at-large.
Ruth E. McDonald Memorial Award -
A graduating senior attending a 4 yr. college program who attended Westford Public Schools for a period of 12 years, attained excellence in academics, served the school community as well as the community-at-large, and is able to show financial need.
Ruth Nesmith Hall Memorial Award-
A graduating senior attending a four year college program in the medical field, who attended Westford Public Schools for a period of 12 years, served the school community as well as community at large.                 
William F. "Billy" Duggan-
Graduating Senior attending 4 year college who attended Westford Public Schools for a period of 12 years, and has made outstanding contributions to WA and the community at large.

WESTFORD ACADEMY ART CLUB AWARD
Graduating seniors of Westford Academy who have demonstrated, through their course of study or their involvement in the art club, a strong commitment to their artistic growth and development.  Preference is given to students planning to pursue the study of art.  Art Department recommends to Trustees

WESTFORD ACADEMY ATHLETIC BOOSTERS CLUB SCHOLARSHIP
Seniors who have participated in Interscholastic Athletics in good academic standing are eligible for the Westford Academy Booster Athletic Scholarship.  Recipients must graduate from Westford Academy and be accepted as a full time student at an accredited institution of higher learning, and shall attend within nine months from date of WA graduation.  Recipients are selected by the WA Boosters.

WASA
Senior going on to higher education.  Applicant must be alcohol/drug free and meet one of the following criteria.  SADD membership, community involvement in substance abuse prevention activity (ex. peer helper, church youth group, family community service), personally overcome substance abuse.   WASA Scholarship Committee selects.

1 to 2 paragraph essay on why you feel you are deserving of this scholarship. Include how participation in substance abuse prevention activities has influenced your own decisions with regard to alcohol / drug abuse.

WESTFORD CHORUS MUSIC AWARD
To a senior who is a member of the WA Music program and plans post graduation education; a student whose activities helped to promote music at WA.  Special consideration given to choral musicians.  To be selected by School Selection Committee.

WESTFORD EDUCATION FOUNDATION FOUNDING MEMBERS SCHOLARSHIP
To be given to a graduating Westford Academy senior interested in pursuing a degree in Education from a 2 or 4 year school
Interested candidates should complete the following statement in 200 words or less

Any senior who will attend an institute of higher learning and pursue a major in the field of horticulture, forestry, agriculture, conservation or allied arts, i.e. marine biology, environmental science or design.  Financial need considered.  Organization Committee makes selection.  Westford Residents only.

WESTFORD HISTORICAL SOCIETY PRIZE
The winner(s) will have researched and written a paper on a topic related to Westford history using rimary sources.  The winner will be selected by a committee chosen from WHS, based on the following:1) Revlevance to Westford History 2) Ability to locate and use relevant primary sources 3) Depth and quality of research 4) Command of material/ability to argue viewpoint 5) Quality of organization and presentation 6) Length (minimum 5 pages plus references)

Graduating senior who is a Westford resident who understands and actively supports traditional Republican  principles.  WRTC award committee selects.

Two scholarships for academic excellence and service to school and community.
Edward M. Connolly Scholarship based on financial need and community service for student planning a two or four year college program concentration in business.  Recommended finalists submitted to Rotary Committee for final selection.

WESTFORD SPORTSMEN’S CLUB SCHOLARSHIP
Given to a graduating senior entering an accredited college.  Preference given to children of Club members.  Application does not guarantee award.  Selection by Organization Committee.  (WSC)

Given to student who participated in Westford Youth Baseball / Softball. Financial need will be a consideration.  College acceptance required.  Selection made by WYBA Board of Directors

WESTFORD YOUTH BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION AWARD
Given to seniors who are present members and playing participants in the Westford Youth Basketball Association.  Consideration will also be given to those who have made a substantial contribution to the program, typically beyond coaching, but did not play as seniors.Volunteer activity in the WYBA is an important component.  College acceptance required.
In addition, to the above, one or two of the applicants will be presented with the Jim Mancuso Memorial Award.- This student will exemplify the traits that Jim Mancuso brought to the association for so many years.  Jim was a tireless, selfless, volunteer who gave everything he had to make the WYBA successful with his one and only focus being the players.  His good sportsmanship, good humor and incredible instinct, energy and enthusiasm leave a lasting legacy for the WYBA.  Selection will be made by the WYBA Scholarship Committee.
